I went back to work yesterday after being off for 8 days and my goodness it was rough waking up.
My nephews and sister-in-law were with us for the holidays and it was a lot of fun hanging out with them. They’re both growing fast and while I love capturing them in pictures and photos, I need to remember to enjoy the moments. Not everything has to be photographed. The boys were a handful and kept me on my toes.
The end of the year wasn’t too busy for me but it did allow me to reflect on the past year. I didn’t reach all my goals but that won’t stop me from setting more in 2017.
Goals for 2017
* Weight loss — yes this is a goal for me every year but I feel this will be the year I make significant progress. The Ketogenic way of eating has been a life changer for me and I’m excited to see what I can do in a full year.
* Work towards saving for a down payment for a condo. This will probably take longer than a year but I plan on saving diligently this year. I’ll have to stop my impulse buying (It’s a pretty big habit of mine)
* Clean closet — this is a huge task since I have a ton of crap in my closet, not just clothes. Whenever I try and work on cleaning it, I get overwhelmed and quit. If I break it up into small tasks it might be a more manageable project.
As far as reading goes, I didn’t reach 100 books but I was pretty close, ended up finishing 95 books. My 2017 goal is 75 books so we shall see how that goes.
I started re-reading the Harry Potter series and plan on watching the movies too. I received the 8-disc set for Christmas so I can watch anytime I want.

I haven’t posted in a month and I can’t even say it’s because I’ve been crazy busy. I just didn’t feel like I had anything interesting to write about.
The last several weeks haven’t been too exciting. I had a birthday on 11/19 and while I had to work that day, after work I went to Red Robin and had a non-Keto meal. I’d been debating on if I wanted to do a cheat meal or not and I figured since it was my birthday, I could splurge a little. I ended up getting a burger, fries (their fries are amazing), and a shake. My burger was bunless so my carbs came from the fries and shake. I’m not going to lie, it was absolutely delicious. But, even though it tasted really good, I wish I’d just stuck with a Keto style meal. Ever since that day, I’ve been struggling to get back into Ketosis. The birthday cheat meal led to me allowing myself to eat whatever I wanted on Thanksgiving, the day after Thanksgiving and pretty much every day since.
I’m disappointed in myself since I’d been doing well and then messed up. That cheat meal turned into a downward spiral. It also doesn’t help that this is the time of year for treats galore. I’m still trying to get back on track and some days I’ll be good during work hours and then I fall apart in the evening. Getting back into low carb is much harder the second time around. I’m seeing that now.
Anyway, I have gained a few pounds back and I’m going to try and get rid of them again, but my goal for the rest of this month is to try and at least maintain my current weight. I’ve been working out at least three times a week for the last few weeks and that paired with drinking more water, I think it’s a feasible goal.
2017 is 16 days away! One thing I love the most about the start of a new year is you can start fresh with any aspect of your life. I always have fitness oriented goals but I’m also going to set some personal goals. As far as fitness goes, I won’t be using the Happy Planner Fitness planner this year. Instead I picked up one of their mini planners and I will use that to track exercise, weight, steps, etc. I don’t need to write down food since I already use My Fitness Pal.
I bought a bunch of fitness stickers from Sweet Kawaii Design on Etsy and I think I’m going to get the MAMBI fitness sticker pack from Michael’s sometime this weekend (they always have coupons) and then I will be all set. Using sticker to motivate myself may sound silly but I love it.
I plan on doing another six month diet bet in January and since I don’t like losing money, I know I’ll do my best with that. All I can do it keep at it.

It’s crazy how November is already half over. Thanksgiving is next week but and a Christmas music has already started. I personally refuse to listen to Christmas music before Thanksgiving, just can’t do it.
Anyway, it’s been an interesting month so far. I was in Monterey over the weekend for the Big Sur Half Marathon and I really enjoyed it. The end of the race didn’t go well but the views along the course were beautiful. I may do it again next year just, I’m not sure yet.
I was doing well with my interval runs until about mile 7, that’s when my calves started cramping. Each time I started running, I’d feel a cramp start. Because of the cramps, I had to walk the remainder of the race. I barely made the time cut off but I made it! The medal was nice, different from my other race medals.
I think I’m done with races for the year but I MIGHT do a Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day. There are a couple local ones so I wouldn’t have to go very far.
I’m down almost 17lbs and am hoping to make it to 20lbs soon so I can reward myself. I told myself once I reached 20lbs, I would buy myself a Pandora charm bracelet and each goal I reach after that will be a new charm. So, 3lbs to go! I’ve been mostly doing the treadmill at home but recently started going back to the gym to switch up the cardio. I’m planning on doing kettle bell workouts soon once my kettle bells arrive. I love working out with them because they can give you a full body workout and you just need one kettle bell.
As far a reading goes, I’ve surpassed my original goal of 60 books. I’m trying to see if I can finish 100 before the end of the year. I’m at 78 right now. I’m finishing up 3 books right now so I might make it, maybe.
Even though Thanksgiving isn’t even here yet, I’m already looking forward to December. My brother and his family will be here to visit for the holidays and I can’t wait to see my nephews again. The oldest one has been reading up a storm and I want to buy him every book I see that might interest him, but he already had a ton of unread books so that will have to wait. He called me this afternoon to tell me he finished one of the books I bought him a couple of months ago and it made me smile. He was so excited! He even made a bookmark for himself so he won’t forget what page he is on. That is one of the reason I love working at the library, seeing the joy on patrons’ faces when they find a book they really want to read.
Anyway, the library is closing soon and I need to make my rounds so I will be back another day.
Guys, this book was innnnntense! When I first read the synopsis I wasn’t sure I’d be into it because it was basically about this guy stalking someone, but once I started I was hooked. I’m pretty sure the reason I was sucked in so fast was due to the fact that the narrator for the audiobook had the creep factor perfected. Santino Fontana, you did a great job of creeping me the hell out.
The story is about a man who becomes obsessed with a woman when she comes into his bookstore. He then rationalizes every step of his stalking madness, it’s crazy. I told my friend Keren to check out the book and it’s been hard to hold back my thoughts because I want to discuss it! She isn’t finished with the book yet so I have to keep my mouth shut.
After I finished the book, I wasn’t sure how to feel. I don’t want to give anything away, but the stuff this guy did was not normal. However, the way he talked about it so casually, made what he was doing almost seem ok. Keyword there is almost. As soon as I can get a copy of the sequel, Hidden Bodies, I’m shutting myself off from the world and reading to my heart’s content.
Happy Hump Day! Over the weekend I drove to Northern California to see my friend Susy get married. Seeing her so happy was totally worth driving 14 hours round trip. Her and her new husband are currently on their Honeymoon in Hawaii 😀. I told myself I’d never do that drive again but ironically enough, I have a half marathon in Monterey next month. Not nearly as far but still at least 5 hours of driving. Those beach views better be worth it!
Anyway, life has been going ok. I’ve been doing the Keto diet for two months and so far in down 13.3lbs. I’m noticing changes in my body and it feels so amazing. When I was at the wedding, I passed up mac and cheese, veggie lasagna, mashed potatoes, and cake! Saying no to those foods wasn’t hard at all. I do miss pasta but I’ve found spaghetti squash is a really good substitute, especially when I eat it with homemade Alfredo sauce. My parents still haven’t really grasped what I can and cannot eat but they’re still supportive. My dad even said he was proud of me for sticking with this, major non-scale victory.
On the reading side of things, I’ve been reading like crazy. I read six books in September and so far I’ve finished three books this month. One of the big ones I recently finished was book 8 in the Outlander series, Written in my Own Heart’s Blood. Sooo good! When I first discovered the series I thought all the books had been released but, I was wrong. Diana Gabaldon is currently working on book 9. The way things are going, I don’t doubt she’ll be finished before the next Game of Thrones book is released.
I’ve completed my Goodreads challenge! I pledged to read 60 books this year and so far I’m at 63. Next year I’ll have pledge at least 75.
Anyway, have a lovely day. I’m determined to get some exercise in today since I haven’t worked out since last week. 😄
It’s been a bit since I did any type of review, even though I’ve been reading like crazy.
I recently finished The Nest by Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney and while it was supposed to be funny and heartwarming, I didn’t feel it was either one of those. Maybe I read too much drama and suspense but the story itself was not very entertaining.
The story revolves around the Plumb siblings and their expected inheritance, The Nest. When Leo Plumb, the oldest, gets into a major trouble, his mother has to dip into The Nest. That is the beginning of numerous problems for the rest of the siblings since they’d all pretty much spent the money before receiving it.
One sibling secretly took out lines of credit on a property owned by him and his partner while another planned on using the money to send her daughters to prestigious universities. While Leo promised to pay back the money owed, this just caused more stress between the family members.
There are four siblings and the majority of the story is told from their points of view. I think one of the reasons I wasn’t really satisfied with this book is I felt like there were questions left unanswered.
It was a fairly short read, less than 400 pages. My rating for the book on Goodreads was 3 stars. If half stars were available I probably would have given it 3.5
I’ve been doing Keto for a little over a month and so far I am down 9.8lbs. While I’ve been doing fine with the food, I have been getting a little tired of red meat. I’m going to try to add more fish and chicken over the next couple weeks just so I don’t lose my mind. I miss pasta sometimes but I’ve been able to have spaghetti squash as a substitute. It isn’t the same but when it’s mixed with a delicious homemade Alfredo sauce, it’s not bad at all. I found Alfredo recipe on reddit and I liked it so much, I made it again the following week. So delicious.
I’ve started taking a multivitamin as well as a magnesium/calcium supplement. Vitamins have never been part of my daily routine so my goal is just to remember to take them each day. They’re huge horse pills too so yeah, fun times. I still need to get one more supplement this week since my potassium levels are low. My muscles have been cramping so I need to up my potassium.
I haven’t noticed a change in my body personally but people around me have noticed a change and that is very encouraging. The other day my dad told me he was proud of me for sticking with this. Normally when he buys ice cream or makes chocolate chip cookies, I’m all over those. But, I haven’t cheated one time. The low-carb treats I’ve made have helped too.
As far as workouts go, I’ve been doing mostly cardio. I’d planned on starting a Kettle Bell program but I still need to read the book that has the program in it. The book was recommended in one of the Keto Facebook groups I am in and I hope to start reading it by the end of the week.
This has nothing to do with Keto but I just wanted to say how excited I am that football is back! My team (49ers) probably won’t do too well this season and that’s ok. I’m excited to watch the games each week as well as keep up on my fantasy teams. Each year I say I’m not going to play and each year I don’t say no. Fantasy is fun but since I have multiple teams, it kind of ruins the fun part. That being said, I’m determined to win at least one of these leagues.
